Background
The Beavers Master's Group Project is a team of graduate students from the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The team will be working with WildEarth Guardians, a conservation non-profit organization with offices in Santa Fe, NM; Denver, CO; and Tucson, AZ to explore the effects of the re-establishment of beaver into the Jemez River watershed. Located in northern New Mexico, beaver have the potential to alter temporal stream discharge and ecosystem services provided by the watershed. The project will determine the ability of the watershed to support a dam building beaver population, model the effect of the reintroduction of beaver dams on stream flow, and perform an ecosystem assessment to determine how beaver may effect habitat for special status species in the watershed.
